Issue: Advertising

Issue 1: Drug Company/Sexual Item Advertising

Are you tired of having to explain to your 5-year old son or daughter what Erectile Dysfunction or Genital Herpes is, or what a personal lubricant or a condom is used for? We are tired of these as well! We believe that drug companies should not be able to advertise their products on TV to the public. Most doctors, if not all doctors, believe the same as well. The average person should not be bothering his/her doctor about a drug they saw on television. Doctors know what drugs are available and they will prescribe what medications you will need. In addition, television is not the place for advertising sexual items. I agree that parents have to monitor what their children watch. But that does not mean we have to monitor every single commercial as well.

Issue 2: Lawyer Advertisements

Are you tired of seeing the advertisements for personal injury and tax lawyers? How many people really do select their lawyers from advertisements on TV? What happened to the good ole days when that was not appropriate or legal? And you notice that there is basically one class of lawyers that do this. You never see corporate lawyers or patent lawyers advertise their services on TV. If you look in the phone book, you will see that not every lawyer in that class of lawyers feels that they need to advertise on TV. It makes me wonder why these lawyers that advertise on TV feel they need to. Personally, I would pick one of the lawyers that do not advertise on TV over any lawyer that does - and there are plenty of them out there. Think about it - why do you think these lawyers need to advertise on TV?

Issue 3: The Small Print

Ever watch a commercial and during the commercial or at the end they flash this real tiny small print on the screen for about 1 to 2 seconds? Or see a car commercial where at the end they have to provide the legal stuff to they have this running text that scrolls down the screen at high speed in tiny letters? These are only two examples and like others are totally useless. They say they have to provide this legal information, but its in such small letters that you cannot read it and it is on the screen so quickly that you can barely make out there is writing on the screen. We say, if they are required to provide us that information, then they are violating the law. No person can read that. If that short blast of useless words meets their legal requirement, then we say that the legal requirement needs to be re-written or go away. If it came down to it, then there is no way it could hold up in court. So we say lets get rid of this nonsense.

Suggestions to Fix the Problem

For the Drug Company Advertising and The Small print, we have to convince the lawmakers to rewrite the laws regarding these. Regarding the Lawyer Advertisements, we have to bombard the State Bar Associations in each State to ask them to change their ethics rules back to the way they were before this junk started filling our airways.
